Tan Sri Datuk (Dr) Rafiah Salim as the new holder of the Women’s Leadership Chair at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaya. Tan Sri Rafiah replaces the first holder, Prof Louise Morley of University of Sussex, Britain.
The Chair began in 2012 to study issues on women’s leadership. The objective of this chair is to ensure that the issue of women’s leadership can be studied by experts and researchers as well as generate indigenous knowledge (local knowledge) in which the input of the study can be used by the Government and other stakeholders. The move is also in line with the objectives of National Policy on Women and policy At least 30 per cent women in decision-making positions (in both the public and the corporate sector) and government bonds to international instruments particularly the ‘Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women’ (CEDAW). In addition, the establishment of Women’s Leadership Chair is the culmination of the Government’s efforts in developing the potential of women in Malaysia.
